Blocks, Blankets, Bolsters! Oh My!!
I admit it! I am a yoga prop lover.  The more I can invite into my practice, the better.  You see, yoga for me is all about moving my body in a nurturing way, a time to check in and really feel into my body.  And including props is a great way for me to do just that.  Actually, I don't even like the word, "prop".  I think it sounds diminishing, less than, which by no means is the case.  Blocks, bolsters, blankets, resistance bands and straps are tools that can really enhance the experience and help access the pose. So read on for my Top 5 Ways to Incorporate Props into Your Yoga Practice.

1.  Want a yummy savasana? Then roll up a blanket and place it under your knees.  You can also use a bolster.  Your low back will thank you deeply.
2.  Want to sit more comfortably when centering?  Add blocks under your bum.  I like placing two blocks side by side and sitting on them.  Your knees can release down and oh, it feels sweet!  If your really feeling adventurous, add a folded blanket on top of your lap. You will feel more grounded right away.
3.  Top shoulder rolling forward when practicing triangle? Add a block under your bottom hand.  Push into it and rise through the top hand.  The heart opens and the shoulders line up.  Yum!!
4.  Stretching the hamstrings? Lie on your back and slip a strap or resistance band over the foot, extend the leg.  Let the strap support you.  The shoulders and head can release and you can really focus on the back of the leg.
5.  Looking to open your heart? This one is especially good if you are slumped over your laptop all day.  Roll up a blanket and place it right at the base of the shoulder blades.  Lay back slowly, letting the tops of the shoulders rest on the floor behind you.  Take a big breath in and exhale through the mouth.  Close your eyes and enjoy! You can thank me later!
Practicing at home? No worries. Books are great substitutes for blocks, pillows are great if you don't have a bolster and a scarf or tie works great in place of a strap.
Want to add props to your home practice?  I would start with blocks, for sure. They run about $10 for two at Target or Walmart.

Happy Yogaing!
