I love chocolate and bread and wine and caramel cake! I love spaghetti and coffee and doughnuts and beer! Basically if it's a refined carb I'm struggling to say no. I am a recovering sugar addict. Can you relate?
When my doctor told me about 5 years ago to quit the sugar, I cried out "No! and laid over on the exam table! Ok, maybe not that dramatic, but damn near close. How could she dare ask me to give up the one last thing that brought me joy! I mean I gave up diet soda, late nights and high heel shoes for God's sake! I literally ignored her for 3 years and the menopause symptoms got rough; the fatigue, the night sweats, the indigestion, the headaches. And the weight continued to add up, even though I was "making healthy choices" and moving my body regularly. Let me be clear, I am not advocating cutting all carbs, no way! Our bodies need carbs for energy and brain power. Just refined sugars, ladies. I'm sharing my three tips here! Three Tips for Kicking the Sugar Habit
1. Set a small goal. I did a 7 day sugar free challenge and it really helped me come to terms with my sugar intake. It was tough, I felt like I had the flu for a few days and I was in a terrible mood. That sounds like fun, right? But I came out on the other side reset, my craving for sugar curbed. And I was amazed at all the things that have hidden sugars. You can do it, girlfriend!
2. Eat enough protein, especially at breakfast. It was my toughest meal, but now I keep hard boiled eggs, low carb protein shakes and bars on hand. And sometimes I even eat dinner left overs for breakfast. Remember you need 20-25 grams per meal to keep your blood sugar balanced. 3. Stop buying sweets! I only buy them now for special occasions or instead of a whole bag, I buy just one candy bar when I have a craving. If they are in the house, I will eat them.... all of them. Some Days I Still Eat Sugar!
I'm not an abstainer. I'm a moderator. AND a rebel. (Thanks, Gretchen Rubin for the "Four Tendencies". Great Read.) I love a good scoop of ice cream or a delicious piece of cake. But too much of a good thing... what is it they say?
Since limiting my refined sugar intake dramatically, I notice less inflammation, no more joint pain! Buh-bye hot flashes and night sweats and itchy skin! Hello clearer complexion! It is so worth it.
